AI models running on the local phone - is (likely) here at scale

Direct access to Apple’s AI models via both APIs and Shortcuts, which is a game-changer for app developers and something that should have been done in the first place (I have been doing almost exactly what they demoed for over a year now with custom Shortcut actions that invoke Azure services, so I am glad they are finally catching up). But having that (and all the privacy-preserving components of their confidential computing platform) available to app developers is a huge win, and I hope they will also make it easier to use custom models in the future.

đź”— Why did I decide to move back to India to take a career break? | Sriram on Medium

Many folks have reached out to me to understand the rationale behind this big step. We had a few months to make the decision as we wanted to wait till the school year finished for the kids. Few things led to this.

I don’t have any plans for what’s next, but I’m looking forward to a reset, spending time with the kids, some serendipity and to being bored.

Code is tool to make art…

Someone once said code is poetry. Another person said code is law. Neither of these are true. Code is a tool of art. Not every person who works with the tool is producing art. Not every person loves the work they are put towards. But it is possible to love to code. To code because you are an artist. To code art. To code because it is a joy and you are joyful. It is possible to do all of those things and not code well too! It is possible to code for joy badly, create something that has no particular accomplishments in the wider world, or massive value, or “true craft”. You can write spaghetti code of the worst sort for a janky program. Art need not be good to be art. Notably, no one will ever get to good art without playing to find their way past making bad art. That’s as true with painting and woodcarving as it is of code.
