an epic is fantasy when it causes you to “imagine.” i wholeheartedly agree with this definition. however, just because it remains as imagination in one storyline, does not mean those arcs *shouldn’t* be imagined. by that definition, any exploration of the past, as utilized by a story prevents it from being in the genre of fantasy.
sure, there are some arcs that have obvious endings in the series. however there are still *many* more areas they leave for imagination.
i also suspect i reach a diff conclusion than the author because unlike majority of the world, i enjoy “rings of power” series. i like that they are pulling back the curtain on the mayars to better explain the Silmarillion.
