A child using a MacBook Neo while wearing AirPods Max on a bed.

The ad image for the MacBook Neo with the Airpods Max is certainly jarring. The Airpods Max are the worst Apple purchase I’ve ever made - yes even worse than my first gen Apple TV.

By all means, the MacBook Neo seems like a great value for money, just like the MacBook Air M1 but better packaged to modern style and branding. The intention for Apple to now push MacBook Air upmarket is not lost on me at a moment where component prices are feeling strong pressure.

That said, for the market it is targeting, this seems like good value for money. Combined with the Watch SE, this is a GREAT entrypoint price into a Mac. Although, it’s clear that most people will still likely enter with an iPad or an iPhone or the Watch SE. This is also Apple’s attempt to leverage the moment that laptops are facing in the current moment of LLMs as well.

However, overall, I welcome this. This is a chance for more of the kids of this generation being introduced to the Mac, which is far more permissive than an iPhone to tinker and engage with computing in a creative and not just consumptive way.

However, I still maintain that the Airpods Max are needlessly expensive, uncomfortably heavy and should NEVER be given to a child. yeesh.
